TIPS FOR INSPIRATION WHEN BUILDING

By Janine Wright @alluringsimmer

When it comes to building in the sims, sometimes the biggest struggle can be figuring out what to build. Builder’s block in The Sims 4 is a real thing and it’s a little disheartening when you go into make something but can’t figure out how to make your vision come to life, or maybe you just don’t have any inspiration. So here are several ways to ignite your imagination when coming up with builds for The Sims 4.

1. Floor Plans

Floor plans are a great way to help you come out with a layout for your builds. Sometimes, you might find yourself struggling with the interior and how to section your rooms or maybe you can’t figure out how you want your home to look on the exterior. You can search up some floor plans for a specific style of home and follow it to create your build.

Feel free to use floor plans as a guide rather than something to follow to a tee. It may be hard to figure out the scale when transferring a floor plan to the Sims 4, however, you can simply use it as a reference for how to lay out your build. Afterwards, all you have to do is figure out the roofing and landscaping!

2. Google Images

My next tip would be to use google images when trying to find inspiration for a build. Sometimes, you might be struggling with figuring out a style to build or maybe, you want to try out a new style and don’t know how to go about it. Try searching up the style in google and seeing what kind of images pop up and use that as inspiration for creating your own build.

The resources are limitless, you can search for practically any style and have a variety of houses/builds that will come up. You can combine styles from different builds, or simply use it as a reference to come up with something on your own.

3. Go outside!

The world around you can sometimes be all the inspiration that you need. Find yourself struggling to figure out what to build, just look outside. Go for a walk and maybe take note of houses/buildings you see around your neighbourhood. Try recreating your own house as practice for building future homes because all the reference you need is right inside your home.

If you aren’t able to go outside, however, you could simply use google maps. Google maps is a great resource because you can just head into street view and see a variety of different homes to use as inspiration for your own builds.

4. Shell Challenges

Another suggestion would be to try out a shell challenge! Shell challenges are a great way to practice figuring out roofing, exteriors and figuring out a floor plan for your builds. A shell challenge is where someone creates the exterior walls of the shell and you have to do the rest, sometimes there are extra twists but overall, these give you great practice to really challenge your creativity.

You don’t have to necessarily enter shell challenges to participate in them. If you want to use a shell on The Sims 4 gallery as a starting base for your own personal build, just download one and change it up to your liking to practice getting a feel for how you want to build for yourself.

5. Recreate

Sometimes you are going to try everything to find inspiration and simply will not be able to come up with anything that you find original. In terms of the Sims, there is nothing wrong with attempting to recreate real life buildings or maybe something from a movie/tv-show in The Sims 4.

You can recreate your own home, recreate an iconic house from your favourite movie. Or maybe use a floor plan that has an image of the final product and recreate that in the Sims 4. You can then decide whether or not you want to make alterations to the interior or exterior and this will give you practice for creating future builds as you try out new styles.

Hopefully, these tips help you when you are struggling to find inspiration to create your own builds. The Sims 4 allows for a lot of creativity, however we all have to start somewhere! It’s not always easy to come up with new, creative ideas, so sometimes you just need a little inspiration to motivate you and get you out of that builder’s block!
